Cot’s story begins in Hindi: khat meant “a bedstead.” A simple bedstead made of a wooden frame and woven rope. It reached English by 1600s as cot. First recorded in 1634 in Thomas Herbert's account of his travels in the East; from Hindi 'khāt', a light bed of cord stretched on a frame. Today, cot means a small, portable bed, especially for a child or for camping.
