Where does the word "chutney" come from? It comes from Hindi chatni, and was adopted directly into English (1800s).

Chutney’s story begins in Hindi: chatni meant “a spiced condiment.” A spiced condiment made from fruit, vinegar, and spices. It reached English by 1800s as chutney. British colonial cooks made fruit chutneys; Major Grey's mango chutney became a popular brand. Today, chutney means a spicy condiment made from fruits, vegetables, vinegar, and spices.
