Where does the word "collage" come from? It comes from French coller, and was adopted directly into English (1919).
Collage’s story begins in French: coller meant “to glue.” From 'colle', glue; Picasso and Braque made the first papier collé works in 1912. It reached English by 1919 as collage. Adopted for the artistic technique of assembling glued materials into one work. Today, collage means an artwork made by assembling different materials glued onto a surface.
