Where does the word "muktuk" come from? It comes from Inupiaq maktak, and was adopted directly into English (1830s).

Muktuk’s story begins in Inupiaq: maktak meant “whale skin and blubber.” Named the traditional food of whale skin and blubber. It reached English by 1830s as muktuk. A rich source of vitamin C in the traditional Arctic diet. Today, muktuk means a traditional Arctic food of whale skin and blubber, often eaten raw or frozen.
