Latte’s story begins in Italian: caffe latte meant “milk coffee.” Literally milk coffee, espresso mixed with steamed milk. It reached English by 1980s as latte. Shortened and adopted as the name for the espresso-and-milk drink. Today, latte means a coffee drink made with espresso and steamed milk.
