Where does the word "kvetch" come from? It comes from Yiddish kvetshn, and was adopted directly into English (1950s).
Kvetch’s story begins in Yiddish: kvetshn meant “to squeeze, to complain.” Literally to squeeze or press, extended to mean to complain. It reached English by 1950s as kvetch. Yiddish 'kvetshn', to squeeze or pinch; 1960s Broadway humour spread it. Today, kvetch means to complain persistently, or a person who complains habitually.
